Passing of Lyle Henry

We mourn the passing of our dear friend, Lyle Henry, who left us on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was 79 years old.

Lyle was a dedicated and long-time member of PFLAG (Los Angeles) and A/PGF (formerly A/PLG), where he made a lasting impact through his involvement and support.

As an esteemed radio engineer, Lyle's career was marked by his work with KUSC in Los Angeles, where he served as the head engineer until the station shifted to modern music formats. Following the closure of KFAC, a notable commercial classical station, KUSC eventually returned to its classical roots.

Lyle's expertise took him around the globe, including assignments in South America and China. During his time in China, he experienced a severe burn from an unprotected high-voltage cable, leading to a significant injury and a long recovery. This incident highlighted a concerning lack of safety standards in the region.

His career also included a stint at KIQQ in Hollywood, where he saw the station evolve from "easy listening" to "All Sports" as KMPC, and later to "All News" or perhaps "All Music" first—his exact order of experiences is a bit of a blur.

Lyle was also known for his creative contributions to PFLAG, recording and distributing speeches from meetings on cassette tapes, which were widely circulated by the organization.

In a memorable moment, Lyle once dressed up as the "Church Lady" for Halloween while working at KIQQ. His disguise was so convincing that neither the receptionist nor his boss recognized him, earning him the affectionate nickname among friends.

No funeral arrangements are planned.

Lyle will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.
